AIPAC in Minneapolis?!
As many Minneapolis residents may already know, AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is gracing us with their presence at the Minneapolis downtown Hilton this week.
No sarcasm intended of course.
What is AIPAC? According to the Anti War Committee website:
AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, describes itself as the most important organization affecting the U.S. relationship with Israel. Because our politicians are fearful of confronting AIPAC, they give in to AIPAC’s demands no matter what the impact on the U.S. or the Mideast, enabling Israel to commit flagrant human rights abuses and violation of international law.AIPAC works to ensure that Israel remain the largest recipient of U.S. military aid and weapons: more than $3 billion/year.
Well, if $3 billion/year took you by surprise then here’s a shocker: the United States Aid to Israel in the year of 2011 is about $8.2 million a day. US citizens, those are 8.2 million of your tax dollars right there
Among the many speakers speaking at the event is Elliot Abrams, AIPAC’s featured speaker:
As Ronald Reagan’s assistant secretary of state for Inter-American affairs, Abrams supervised U.S. policy in Latin America, which resulted in the killing of countless thousands of innocent civilians throughout Central America, murdered at the hands of American-trained death squads and military units—more than 200,000 civilians were murdered in Guatemala alone. Many more were tortured and raped by U.S. proxies and CIA operatives—all this with the connivance of Elliot Abrams, who lied to Congress about the atrocities. Abrams was convicted of perjury (and later pardoned by George H.W. Bush). Elliot Abrams was also one of the original signatories to the Project for a New American Century, which openly advocated for total global military domination. Under George W. Bush, Abrams held positions in the National Security Council where he oversaw Bush’s disastrous and unjust Mideast policies.
While some might be comfortable knowing where their tax dollars are headed, there are justice lovers out there who would love to give AIPAC, as well as the politicians that support it’s atrocities, a piece of their mind.
Stand on the side of justice at 5:30, Wednesday, June 29 at the front door of The Minneapolis Hilton, 1001 Marquette Avenue South to protest this promotion of war and propaganda for Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian land.
It will be made clear to the elected officials and the general public that Minnesotans reject AIPAC’s extremist agenda and that peace is demanded based on justice.
Let your voice be heard, bring your signs, and stand up for what’s right
